New Releases:
In this section, we cover new file releases that we find notable. If something catches your interest, go download and start printing!
NULL-22 (Not-A-Glock v2) Releases
We’re starting out this issue with a design that will certainly grab some attention. The NULL-22, described by designer Ju5t3nc4s3 as a version 2 of the Not-A-Glock, has released.
The original NAG made a splash when it first released and created its own subcommunity of builders. It also attracted its share of criticism / bullying, which led this subcommunity to split off into its own corner.
The NULL-22 seems to address some of the criticism the NAG received. How does the NULL-22 differ from the Not-A-Glock?
The original NAG used hard-to-source tungsten powder as void fill for its bolt. The NULL-22 no longer requires tungsten powder.
The NULL-22 is larger, about the size of a G19, whereas the NAG was roughly the size of a G26.
The developer reports that the NULL-22 can handle more powerful .22LR rounds, specifically citing 1640FPS CCI Stingers.
Frustratingly, the NULL-22 release files do not contain documentation. It appears that the expected build experience is for the builder to either figure it out himself, or to join the NAG SimpleX group to receive build guidance. A QR code to join this group can be found in the developer’s Odysee profile.
There is something compelling about the NAG / NULL-22 designs. They are not the first fully DIY semiautomatic .22LR pistols, being preceded at least by the YEET22, and yet they still accomplish functionality that for many years was thought impossible. I am glad to see further development here, and I hope the developments (and efforts to produce actual documentation) will continue!
Super Safe 3DP90:
It’s here! The 3DP90 can now run in fully semiautomatic with a few modifications. The 3DP90 SS uses a modified Super Safety design, combined with a sliding trip lever, to enable the functionality.
Much of the effort in this project was focused on eliminating bolt bounce. Several features were added to this end, including deadblow weights in the bolt, mimicking the original P90.
Building a Super Safe 3DP90 will require printing a new bolt, receiver, trunnion and stock, but the rest of an existing 3DP90 build can be reused.
This is not a beginner build, and tuning for your particular setup will be necessary. But surely the effort is worth it to shoot $50 worth of 5.7x28mm in a few seconds!
Barrel Feed Cone Jigs:
Developer ImmortalRevolt, author of the REBEL-9 and ROGUE-9, brings us a system to mill a “feed cone” into the breech of an FGC-9 / ROGUE-9 style barrel (either ECM or OEM.)
The concept is actually fairly simple: the jig helps position a large countersink bit precisely against the breech of the barrel; shims are used to precisely mill the feed cone to the exact right depth.
Testers report dramatic improvements with feeding reliability; ImmortalRevolt recommends applying it to all DIY barrels going forward.
There is one difficulty with this release: the countersink bit profile recommended by ImmortalRevolt (120 degrees with a thin head) seems almost unobtainable in the US.
I was actually part of this beta and spent considerable time trying to either find a proper bit or to adapt the jig design to a US-available bit, both to no avail. If anyone can source this bit or otherwise adapt this release for US persons, please let me know!
Urutau Receives an Update:
The Urutau has received an update, bouncing it to v1.1. Along with several minor changes, this update introduces two major changes:
The method for building the Urutau bolt has changed. Instead of epoxying a pinned bolt face / weight into the printed bolt body, the bolt face and weight are now bolted together, and are then bolted into the printed housing.
This makes assembly easier, likely produces a more reliable bolt, and makes it far easier to disassemble the bolt if need be.Extra documentation is provided regarding verifying barrel headspace. This was prompted in significant part due to an OOB experienced with an out-of-spec commercial FGC-9 barrel.
If you purchase a commercial barrel, please read this section closely to ensure the headspacing is correct. I used this guide to confirm that 3D Print Freedom’s AR9 barrels are properly headspaced.
The new method of constructing the bolt modifies the Urutau BOM. We have updated our Urutau kits to switch over to this new, superior method.
New Betas:
In this section we round up recently opened betas. Help support development by joining these betas and testing!
thREEVOLVER Beta Now Live:
Now here is a true FOSSCAD design. The thREEVOLVER is a beefy three-shot revolver chambered in .380ACP. It mounts three Bersa .380ACP barrels in its cylinder, which is turned by hand to each position and fired using a fully DIY trigger / hammer system.
Want to help test this beast? This design is in beta at Black Lotus Coalition!
Plasticatto Beta Opens:
From developer killory.hinton comes the Plasticatto, a Glock 17 frame with several added features optimizing it for competitive shooting. These include an integrated compensator, tungsten weights and a DIY holster system.
Join the beta at the Gatalog Rocketchat.
HubTN.4 556L and 32ACPL
The HubTN.4 is an iteration on the FTN.4 design which attempts to improve and simplify assembly, and to add support for 5.56 and .308 rounds. The latest in this series are the 556L and 32ACPL variants, both of which hit open beta this week.
Learn more about the beta here, or check out the beta files: 556L, 32ACPL
Coming Soon:
This section lists announcements or previews for projects that have not yet hit open beta. Keep an eye out for further news about these projects!
Full-Auto Urutau
The original Urutau released in semiauto-only, but this week developer Zé Carioca announced that a full-auto variant is coming in the next few months! It sounds like all engineering problems are solved, and all that remains is updating the documentation.
We will of course announce the release once it’s live. Keep an eye out!
Defiance AR-15 Lower Updates
In Issue #2 I mentioned Proof’s Defiance AR lower as something worth paying attention to. It seems that Proof is not yet finished with this design. He recently showed off some upgrades he’s adding.
These upgrades include interchangeable grips and trigger guards, reinforced front takedown pinholes, and most exciting, FRT / SS compatibility. He’s also doing pushups on the rifle.
Looking forward to seeing this release!
Easy-To-Make Urutau Firing Pin
The DIY Urutau firing pin can be tricky to make, and it seems that even when made properly, its design allows it to fail more quickly than expected. After experiencing these problems, developer kopsis decided to remix the firing pin into something more solid.
This new FP construction is based on the Decker’s firing pin design, securing the pin with a printed “cap”. No JB Weld required!
Kopsis plans to test this a bit more before releasing it, but once released this should make for an easier Urutau build experience.
(If you want to make your Urutau build easier still, you can also buy one of our CNC’d, heat treated Urutau firing pins!)
News:
In this section we’ll review major news events either originating in the 3D2A space, or particularly pertinent to this space.
Metadata Discovered in Bambu-Generated 3MF Files
TL;DR: if you generate 3MF files with Bambu Slicer / Orca, or upload any 3MF to Makerworld, your shared files may expose potential PII. Remove or redact your files.
Guncad Index developer TheShittinator recently discovered that 3MF files generated in Bambu Studio or Orca contain metadata that may include personally identifiable information, including BambuLab user IDs
Furthermore, any 3MF uploaded to MakerWorld has been found to include usernames, country of origin and more.
Shittinator worked with major community leaders before disclosing this problem to ensure all uploads they are responsible for have been scrubbed. If this is your first time hearing about this, you are highly encouraged to scrub your own metadata, if you generate 3MF files in Bambu / Orca, or upload to Makerworld.
3MFs generated in other softwares (like Fusion360) do not (apparently) include significant PII in the same way those generated in Bambu / Orca do. Despite this, Shittinator recommends eschewing the use of the 3MF file format, due to the potential of future problems of this nature arising.
While I take the point, I will note out that other common formats, like STEP files, also potentially contain compromising metadata - indeed, virtually any file format is subject to these concerns.
A better approach in my opinion is to standardize the use of metadata scrubbers prior to sharing files. Shittinator notes a plan to develop a toolkit to perform just this sort of thing. We’ll report progress on this as it develops.
Nopel Launches Webstore
In more positive news, the developer behind the belt-fed 9mm RBC-9 and the printable Gatling gun M1337 has launched a webstore!
Aside from listing all of Nopel’s designs, you can also purchase prefabricated versions of some of the necessary parts for these builds.
I’m proud to help signal boost this fantastic dev. Go check out his store at https://nopel-0.com/
NylAUG Barrels Back In Stock
After a loooong time out of stock, 5.56 16” NylAUG barrels are once again available at 3D Print Freedom! Purchase one by itself, or as part of a complete kit.
There’s some major NylAUG news coming soon, so you may want to grab one of these before they sell out again!
Other Links:
This section will collect any other links I find interesting. These may be older designs I want to share, releases I find notable but don’t have much commentary on, or anything else that catches my eye.
Gatalog recently dropped the latest in the UBAR series, the UBAR3 / UBARX. This new version adds broader compatibility with AR uppers, and introduces an integral grip version (the UBARX) which improves the strength of the lower even further.
CopperShop released the “Shock Stock” which, as the name implies, uses 100mm RC shocks to help absorb recoil. It appears to be designed with launcher use in mind, although theoretically it could be applied to rifles as well.
Speaking of launchers, gregstrickling released a printable mod for the Lee LoadAll reloading tool to facilitate loading 26.5mm and 37mm shells. Way cool!
Developer AemAer reports that he has resolved all issues reported with his SSAug Lever Over-Extension Retainer Shim, which helps limit the Super Safety lever’s range of motion and prevent slippage after sufficient wear. You can download and print this yourself, or purchase prints at AemAer’s eBay store.
Funky_Fetus_Fabrications has compiled 23 different Ragnar Benson books and uploaded them to Odysee for your reading pleasure. Benson and other Paladin Press authors are in many ways the precursors to modern DIY Defense, and their works are still worth your time!
M&P 2.0 owners may be interested in the Freedom Finger FRT, which converts your M&P to fully semi-auto.
Remnants recently dropped an updated version of the SSSzar that adds support for using more of the original VZ61 parts, including the wire stock and the grip. This means you can use more parts from our vz61 kits!
