Issue #6: DIY Artillery, Super Safe Handguns, New Pistol Frames
We're printing plinkers, howitzers and everything in between
Welcome to the Guncad Digest! This newsletter will regularly round up the best and most interesting 3D2A releases, betas and news.
If you want the Guncad Digest delivered straight to your inbox, you can subscribe to this Substack.
You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit, where we’ll post notifications when a new issue of the Digest is live!
In today’s issue:
Help Us Rebuild:
Our Twitter / X account was suspended in mid-June. Worry not! We are rebuilding.
We have created two new accounts moving forward:
A new account for 3D Print Freedom, now rebranded slightly to 3D2A: link
A second account specifically for the Guncad Digest: link
If you haven’t yet, please follow both accounts - thank you!
New Releases:
In this section, we cover new file releases that we find notable. If something catches your interest, go download and start printing!
90-Who: Printable Taurus PT92 Frame
Want a printable Beretta 92 but don’t want to pay Beretta prices? Developer optimal_fail has your back, bringing us the 90-Who printable frame for Taurus PT92 parts kits.
A quick glance at EveryGunPart shows significant savings on these kits vs. Beretta 92 kits - when they’re in stock, anyways. Keep an eye out for one so you can complete this neat build!
Kabuto TURD for SF5
The community’s exploration into the TURD continues! Developer sillacsaurfang brings us an adaptation of this design to the SF5, which requires both a new trip and a new lower.
This may be the appropriate place to note that original TURD files from Kabuto Firearms were removed from Odysee, apparently to stop people from downloading an old version. The design now lives on through its various remixes and adaptations, like this one.
SCS Binary Trigger: Discobin
It’s sillacsaurfang again, this time with a novel design to transform an M16 burst trigger into a selectable binary fire system. The core is a custom disconnector that is meant to be cut using a laser service like SendCutSend.
Aside from the trigger, this design requires a handful of other M16 FCG parts, so handle with care.
Unseenkiller Tor Glock Mag
Ever wanted an extra-long Glock mag? Don’t lie, yes you have. Actually there’s plenty of these already, but Unseenkiller provides a new one with the Tor mag, a Glock mag visually styled after the Vector’s magazine.
This design goes to great pains to sit flush against standard Glock frames, so you can make your Glock looks like it has an extra long grip (or you can print a design specifically for that purpose, because of course there is one.)
Updates:
In this section we will mention updates to major releases - fixes, new variants, etc.
OK Zoomer V2 Releases
From Uberclay of the Gatalog comes the second version of the OK Zoomer, a printable Ruger SR45 frame! This is primarily an aesthetic / ergonomic update, but it’s been fully tested so you can print with confidence.
Bolt-Through Decker Makes Your Decker Build Even Easier
The Decker is already quite an easy build, but it does involve screwing long reinforcing rods through the length of the gun. This is tedious and, if done incorrectly, can melt your hard work - but no more, thanks to developer gregstrickling.
The Decker Bolt Thru provides an oversized channel for the rods to run through, along with slots for captive nuts to hold the rods in place. This mod also gives the Decker a rather cool new aesthetic.
We’ve updated our Complete Decker parts kit to support this version of the build (while still supporting the original as well!)
NULL22 Gets an Assembly Video
We shared the NULL-22 back in Issue 3, and lamented its lack of documentation at the time. Happily, developer Ju5t3nc4s3 has since created a 10 minute video showing how to assemble the design.
I continue to think the design itself is cool, and I’m happy to see it documented. Get building!
Defiance Lower Updates and New Versions
The Defiance lower seems to be getting a lot of attention lately! Perhaps because of this, Proof has forked his own project into two versions: Gen1, which has an integrated grip, and Gen2, which allows interchangeable grips and has super safety compatibility.
Gen1 is available now as an open beta, while Gen2 appears to be closed beta at this time. I actually think this design has the potential to be the next big AR lower, so if you’re looking to build a lower, come and help test!
New Betas:
In this section we round up recently opened betas. Help support development by joining these betas and testing!
Seeking Testers for DIY Artillery Piece
Good news for artillery guys: you can finally say you’re 3D printing a gun. This is the TISM (tube-based indicator and signaling mechanism), a 37mm artillery piece mounted on an adjustable carriage, so you can spread the signal into neighboring counties.
Bigbore_729 has teased this project on /r/fosscad, and is now seeking experienced testers to help bring the thing to release. Be aware that this will require several kilograms of filament. Bigbore, if you’re reading this, I want in!
Moore Dakka V2 Enters Beta
UberClay has been on a .45AARP kick lately - in addition to his OK Zoomer release, he’s also opened a beta for the next iteration of the Moore Dakka, a printable M&P45 frame.
Like the OK Boomer V2, this redesign is predominantly ergonomic, not functional. If you want in, message UberClay in the usual places!
SCS MILC Open Beta:
Initially mentioned as “coming soon” in Issue 5, the SCS MILC project from 404logicnotfound has now entered open beta! The idea here is to replace the drilled MILC bolt with a stack of SCS cut flats, which you can see in the image above.
This actually appears beefier and potentially stronger than the original MILC design. If so, this may make a great pair with the TISM mentioned above! I certainly intend to try printing some of these.
Detent-Delayed UMP 11/9:
The magic of guncad: an idea, once revealed, will quickly spread. This is a fine example of that. The Detent UMP 11/9, also from 404logicnotfound, adopts the detent delay first introduced with the Holdup and applies it to MPRTech’s UMP 11/9.
This is a beta, so test appropriately and give good feedback!
Coming Soon:
This section lists announcements or previews for projects that have not yet hit open beta. Keep an eye out for further news about these projects!
Super Safe Handguns Coming Soon
“But Alyosha, super safeties are only for rifles!” Not anymore thanks to AemAer, who is bound and determined to put a SS on every gun in existence. This “Short-Action Super Safety” design allows you to insert a handgun (in this case a Steyr M9) into the chassis and fire it in fully semi-auto mode. Video examples of firing are already available here and here.
Details are scarce on precisely how this works but some functionality can be inferred from this slow motion video. Due to this chassis being designed to hold the complete handgun, the CAD is not precisely universal, but we are told that the design could be adapted to any other handgun with a simple geometry change.
AemAer will be bringing this into closed beta soon. I look forward to further updates!
Trinity Wesson - .22 Short Three-Shot Revolver
Fully DIY revolvers are making a comeback! First the thREEVOLVER, which we mentioned in Issue 3, and now the Trinity Wesson from Here2printeverything. This .22 Short revolver is a simple design, with a manually rotated cylinder, but it’s already been successfully fired!
The developer describes it as serving a role similar to the Harlot, but with three shots instead of one. In fact, he’s already created a Harlot mod to allow you to retrofit his cylinder onto a Harlot body! Can’t wait to see a beta for these designs.
PrintYour2A “Slim” AR Reinforcement In Development
Friend of the Digest PrintYour2A has always done interesting work with bent sheet metal rails and reinforcement, and his reinforced PrintYour2AR-15 has long been a solid option for the discerning gun printer. Now he’s got an update for that design in the works which he claims will slim the receiver down without sacrificing strength.
Note that the pictured AR lower is also set up for Evo mags, indicating some more interesting work is going on aside from just the reinforcement update. Stay tuned!
Chairmanwon Initiates RXM FCU Bending Project
I heard there was some big news recently about FCU-based pistols? Presumably it was the fact that chairmanwon has started a project to bend a Ruger RXM chassis from a custom-cut flat, utilizing DIY jigs.
Why the RXM? Per the Chairman, the RXM parts kit is identical to a Gen3 Glock aside from three parts, two of which can be affordably purchased. The third part is the serialized chassis itself.
If anyone can make this design happen, it’s the Chairman. I will watch with interest!
News:
In this section we’ll review major news events either originating in the 3D2A space, or particularly pertinent to this space.
Thingiverse Bans Guns Even Harder
New York is at it again. Following a letter from the fine, intelligent politicians pictured above, Thingiverse has publicly committed to ensuring that “unlawful and harmful content” such as 3D2A files cannot be uploaded and shared on their platform.
This is of course nothing new. Thingiverse’s nannyism has been a source of ire for the guncad community since its literal beginning. What might be new is their announcement of “automated technology” to “rapidly detect and remove” 3D gun files, but one is skeptical that even this is anything more than political theater.
It is also entirely ineffectual given that nobody is downloading their Glock frames from Thingiverse in the first place. The actual potential chokepoints in guncad have so far fended off this sort of histrionic badgering. Can they do so forever? Time will tell.
Guncad Index Updates
As promised in Issue 4, our friend Shittinator has not been idle in updating the Guncad Index even after its version 1 release. We’ve had a few updates go live since then - what’s new?
Improved caching throughout to make the speedy website even speedier
Thumbnails now appear in autocomplete results
API can now filter by channels
Licenses are now autodetected and filterable
This last part shows many files are regrettably tagged with licenses that forbid sharing and remixes. If these prohibitions were actually intended by their creators, they are an unfortunate byproduct of a litigious unpleasantness working its way into guncad culture.
Developers should use the Index’s new license tags to help ensure their remix is legit and legal. They should also remember that, if you add a license to your file, you should make sure you know its full implications.
Other Links:
This section will collect any other links I find interesting. These may be older designs I want to share, releases I find notable but don’t have much commentary on, or anything else that catches my eye.
Developer Germy_Ballswell brings us a printable air cannon that can be charged to various pressures and shoot projectiles at a surprisingly high speed. Unlike Proof’s airgun, Germy’s cannon is meant more as a fun (but still dangerous) toy. Find it at Cults!
I have a special place in my heart for printed sights, and unseenkiller has provided a V2 of his printed sight design. It appears to be adjustable for elevation but not windage, hence the “general direction” name. Throw it on your Super Safe Mac, it’s not like you’re going to hit anything with that anyways.
There’s another Guncad Index update that I didn’t mention above - the Index can now display animated thumbnails. Naturally, this was immediately uploaded following that update.
Developer ToolOrDie brings us some FMDA19.2 frames which have been optimized for rails-down printing. I thought I should include this because it’s a fine example of the kind of unsung grunt work that makes guncad great. It’s not a fancy, flashy release - simply a useful entry into the pantheon of FMDA frames. God bless the developers.
